Why are our Teens suffering from anxiety?

I went to a party the other night where i didn’t know most of the people. I met two other women and we got talking about life and somehow got on to the topic of our children. I was amazed to discover we all had teenagers whose lives were being impeded by their experience of anxiety. One had been hospitalized for a good length of time and was now in an out patients program, the other was barely attending school and both were spending a lot of time on the computer. These experiences were so similar to my own and I felt an overwhelming sadness that anyone else was going through this.

The sadness moved into questioning what is going so wrong in the lives of our teens. What are the precursors to this?

My brainstorm so far is…

  • Nutrition
  • Computers
  • Schooling expectations
  • Pace of life
  • Lack of responsibities or purpose
  • Parenting
  • Social expectations

I need to research this further but if you have ideas of the causes or any data you would like to share, I invite you to do so.

About R Congues

Funny enough, this blog has become the expression of my hopes, dreams, love and experiences. It came about because of the situation I discovered I was in, and I am delighted to see it grow and heal into something different: I am a parent of two children, one who has experienced severe anxiety that became disabling in all aspects of their life. I am a teacher of Maths, Science and Religious Education with a Masters in Special Needs Education; I am a qualified Reiki master, with a love of art and creative experience. I am not a professional in the fields of psychology or medicine. (If you are interested in these perspectives there are many internet sites to use.) I am simply expressing my experience in my own unique way.
