Smashing the Bottle

Trapped in a glass bottle, hidden from view,
The weight of the thoughts of not letting it be seen.
The camouflage of survival needed to protect and keep
The little one safe and able to sleep.

The night of darkness awakens the fear
Lurking out there is the real threat of exposure,
Whispers of smoke, reveal the smouldering deep within
You know not what you stir, how deep and dark it seeps.

You bottle it inside and wear a mask to the world
Your hope is to be normal, imposter! you are exposed
Welling within it all rises to the surface
As you age past the busyness of life, you question the worth.

For who are you to experience the emotions of the storm
Stoic behaviour is required to keep on the go
Yet this isn’t enough, you are more, you are able
To be healthy and to grow into a unique human being.

Unlocking that which is within is painful, especially in times of extreme
There is no cheer squad saying, come on let it out…just scream
Emotions are dirty, kept at a distant, kept at bay
Yet without them we are empty, worthless and grey.

Voting to express the pain of old, present and future
Giving gratitude over everything the boot and looking to express what is true
Unpopular this may be, without we are lost
Humming a bland tune with no passion or lust.

Sadness deepens, it is good to begin to feel
To know that many stand beside, open eyed and just real.
Open hearts are easy to hurt but they also mend from all the festering
Bring on the healing that is deep and real and long lasting.
